What is Corporate
Identity & do I need it?
Corporate identity
is the same thing as branding; it is the building of a graphics
package that best represents your business.
Most businesses will have to advertise at
some stage, whether it is on screen using the internet or
in print. Having a strong graphics package
will help people become more familiar with your company and
therefore more comfortable with dealing with you again and
again.
Here is the check list on some of
the more important features in a graphics package:
- The first and most important
is your logo.
Ask yourself does your logo represent you and what you do.
Is it strong and easily distinguished from other logos? Is
it something you are proud of?
- Secondly you need to create
a photo library.
It is best to get an experienced photographer to do this work
as you will need to use these photos again and again. Sometimes
it is good to update once a year to keep your customers informed
of new changes in your business.
- Next you will need a colour
scheme. It is best to keep it simple using
two or three colours and repeating them on everything in relation
to your business.
- Choosing a font
is very important. Sometimes it is good to choose an original
font but you must remember that it has to be easily legible
not to confuse your potential customers.
- A slogan
is also useful in helping people to remember your business.
Also it is important that you work out the wording that has
to be used when advertising as it is you that knows your business
best.
Making the public familiar with your image
is not always easy and it may be necessary to flood the minds
of potential customers with a new look if you want to get
off to a good start and be remembered. That is why making
the effort in building your specific graphics package is so
important. To change your image at a later stage will mean
that the customers that were once familiar with your look
will no longer be and you will need to invest all over again
in advertising that new image. That can be costly, so it is
best to do it right the first
time and your image, identity and business can only get stronger.
When you have your graphics package together
you can then apply it to:
Web sites, brochures, letter heads, folders, compliment slips,
business cards, flyers, magazine adverts, posters, billboards,
vehicle graphics, signs, exhibition stands, shop interiors
etc.
It is very important to establish
the background information on the business for which the design
work is being carried out. Therefore as much information on
existing colours, symbols, images, customer types, and anything
else the client sees’s relevant to his/her business
is required. The clearer this information is the more satisfied
the client will be with the final result.
