About the Algarve

A wide variety of leisure interests are close by or within easy reach of Casa Andorinha. We have tried to give a variety of examples below.

There are leisure activities to suite everybody here in the Algarve, from those wanting the more tranquil activities, such as golf, wine tasting, walking, boat trips, sightseeing, visiting museums and art exhibitions, to the more adventurous, such as quad biking, diving and water sports, horse riding, Jeep Safaris, karting.

There are activities for families with young children and teenagers for example zoo´s, a marine life park at Zoomarine where you can even swim with dolphins if you book in advance, waterslide parks, ten pin bowling, tennis etc

We have listed a number of useful website links to various leisure facilities, but obviously we can´t list everything.

Silves Annual Medieval Festival - Usually during the second week of August, Silves returns to the 12th, 13th and 14th centuries and this really is a festival not to be missed. The cobbled streets and alleyways of Silves historic centre are the perfect setting for this snapshot of medieval life with the colourful market stalls, beggars, strolling minstrels, jugglers, jousting competitions and lots more!

FIESA - International Sand Sculpture Festival, now in its 8th year is a spectacular event which everyone of all ages will enjoy.

FIESA is a mega exhibition of sand sculptures held by Prosandart since 2003 in Pêra, Algarve, that in each new edition is dedicated to a different theme. The festival is unique in the Iberian Peninsula and is considered the largest sand sculpture festival in the world, by the size of its sculptures and the area they occupy

Shopping - The Algarve has a great range of stores, from global brands and large shopping malls to small local stores packed with hand-made items, from gypsy markets to designer outlets.

Wine Tasting - One such opportunity is at Adega do Cantor providing an unique opportunity to visit the winery that produces Sir Cliff Richard's wine, Vida Nova. The winery is situated at Quinta do Miradouro in Guia, a few kilometres northwest of Albufeira.

Zoomarine - Discover the mysteries of the oceans. Located in Guia, just a few kilometers from Albufeira, you can watch presentations with dolphins, seals and sea lions, with tropical birds and birds of prey.

Here you find also an amazing aquarium with sharks, various habitats, Cinema4D, attractions, amusements and swimming pools, making your visit to Zoomarine even more unforgettable.

Swim with dolphins - Dolphin Emotions Exclusive package is a completely private experience, where 2 participants, under the supervision of a trainer, can enjoy moments of pure emotion with the fantastic dolphins. This has to be booked in advance.

Autodromo International Algarve - Designed to be one of the best and most modern circuits in Europe and with the approval of IMF (International Motorcycling Federation) and FIA (International Automobile Federation), the new Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (AIA) promises to make history. In different packages and offers, a range of unique experiences and strong emotions are being made available at this, one the most thrilling circuits in existence.

With a rental car you have many opportunities to experience and see much of what Algarve has to offer. How about a trip up the Monchique-mountains with its almond-, orange- and olive groves and fresh air filled with eucalyptus. With a car you can also reach “the end of the world”, Cabo sao Vicente, Europes most south-eastern point. Here once laid the school of navigation of henry the navigator, and it is easy to understand how the Portuguese acquired the desire to find what was beyond the horizon. Many of the cities are worth a visit, e.g. Faro, Portimão and Lagos. The proud culture of the Portuguese can be found, and felt, in all of them.

Finally, we must mention food and drink. Locally, in Messines and Silves, there are many restaurants offering traditional Algarvean food and drink at reasonable prices. In the coastal resorts, you will find any type of cuisine you fancy, but at a higher cost of course.
